Technical data:
* Klystron / Klistron electron tube
General information about the klystron:
The klystron is a type of time-of-flight tube.
A time-of-flight tube is an electron tube used to generate or amplify microwaves. Klystrons are therefore used in high-frequency technology.
The operating principle of the klystron is based on the time of flight of electrons.
In time-of-flight tubes, the discharge systems are designed so that time-of-flight effects determine the tube’s function.
First, a homogeneous stream of electrons at a constant speed is generated, whose electrons are then exposed to a controlling electric RF field in which they are accelerated or decelerated depending on the starting phase.
Among long-duration tubes, a distinction is made between drift tubes and traveling-wave tubes.
In practice, time-of-flight tubes are two-chamber and multi-chamber klystrons, traveling-wave tubes, backward-wave tubes, and magnetrons, as well as certain hybrid forms such as traveling-wave klystrons.
The two-chamber klystron is a drift tube in which the electron flow is specifically a high-frequency electron beam, which is prevented from Coulomb spreading by a non-distinct longitudinal magnetic field.
The multi-chamber klystron is created by placing one or more freely oscillating additional resonators between the input and output resonators of a two-chamber klystron, the total length of which is then a multiple of the distance from the first phase focal point.
The reflex klystron is created from the two-chamber klystron by placing a reflective electrode approximately halfway along the resonator. This causes all electrons to reverse their direction, the fast ones at a greater distance from the resonator than the slow ones. Both types of electrons thus reach the resonator gap at the same time on their return journey. Reflex klystrons serve to generate oscillations.
